rFMS in neurorehabilitation

The presentation aims at showing the use of rFMS (repetitive functional magnetic stimulation) in motor disturbance images which are related to an increase in tone and paresis. By means of a coil, magnetic impulses (up to approximately 4.5 tesla), duration 280 µs, are generated. They induce an electric field that depolarizes nerves and neuronal tissue. rFMS offers the possibility of triggering muscle activities even if the patient has little or no access to motoric functions. Thus, a path towards movement can be facilitated and this can help in relearning motor functions respectively locomotion patterns. In the context of sensory-motor neurorehabilitation, rFMS opens interesting new fields of use in findings as well as for therapy. Video examples will be shown to demonstrate how different stimulation modules can decrease hypertonic muscles and activate paretic muscles or muscle chains. Experience shows that rFMS can be a sensible addition in neurorehabilitation.

Recently, transcranial electric stimulation (tES) has been suggested to aid human performance across several domains. Despite this, our understanding of how tES influences the brain, and individual differences in performance change following tES remain limited. I will discuss how these gaps lead to several challenges of using tES as a tool to aid cognition.
